Sinopse: Product Description A Epopeia Amazonica de Frei Pedro de Santo Eliseu is an epic poem in 595 stanzas of 8 verses each (oitava real) never published before. It narrates a trip, via the Amazon River, from Belem do Para to the Spanish Indies far to the west, in year 1709. The trip took more than 6 months and includes anthropological information of highest interest, as the procedure to elongate the head of the Cambeba Indians (stanza 380), as well as agricultural, fishing and hunting descriptions. The author is a Carmelite friar of solid classical education who accommodates Christian dogma, Greek mythology, Amazonian geography and patriotic reading of Portuguese history. The stanza 146, which is very surprising for those uncritical days, points out the deceiving aspects of the missionary activity, gained through gifts or threat, most Indians reverting to the forest and tribal existence.The administrative and social differences, formal politeness and the etiquette voiced by King Dom Joao V absolutist regime are faithfully reproduced in various situations, what causes surrealistic contrasts with human and environmental most crude aspects. The book was selected, in terms of intellectual qualification, by the jury of the Jabuti Prize, in Brazil. The original manuscript is reproduced, as well as transcribed in formal writing.
