Autor: André Cypriano
Sinopse: English and Portuguese text. "In the early 1980s I was a teenager who loved discovering deserted beaches to surf at, a pleasure that allowed me to be far from the bustling city of Sao Paulo. It was on one of these trips along the Brazilian coast that I discovered Ilha Grande, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It was a paradise, with lots of waterfalls, exuberant vegetation, wild beaches and unspoiled waves. Fascinated by its beauty, I returned to the island on many other occasions, always facing the exhausting eight-hour ride. With its unaltered environment, Ilha Grande would transport me back to the time of Brazil's discovery. I soon learned that in this paradise there also existed an enormous penitentiary, located inside a state nature reserve. Housing some of the country's most dangerous criminals, this prison guarded terrible stories of deaths, torture and rape among its many mysteries. 'The Devil's Caldron', 'The Abandoned' and 'The Damned' were nicknames that hinted at the horror that could exist inside. In 1993, I returned to Ilha Grande. I went back not to admire its beauty as I had in my youth, but to undertake the challenge of being alongside the 600 prisoners in the Candido Mendes Penal Institute - the Caldron. My objective was to document the life of the prison through photography before it was closed. In order to do this, I tried to capture how the prisoners felt being surrounded by a forbidden paradise." -Andre Cypriano
